earned a more formidable reputation as an analytical thinker than harold brown who was the nation's 14th defense secretary during the carter administration. a true prodigy he earned hi doctorate in physics from columbia university when he was just 21. he started his career at livermore lab in california and eventually moving to the pentagon where he became the director of defense research and engineering then air force secretary and eventually defense secretary. his ability to handle a staggering workload are legend including read and annotating 400 page briefing books overnight. during the career brown shaped fighters like the f-15 and f-16 that remain the air force's backbone fleet today. and championed jointness among the military serv before the failed iran hostage rescue mission convinced others to follow. now 85, brown continues to serve on the defense policy board and is a trustee of the center for strategic and international studies. with joyce winds low, brown recently co-authored "star- spangled security" applying lessons safeguarding america. i asked him whether jointness was

sentence of life in prison in the death of 7-year-old maria rid ridulph. patti ann browne from the new york city newsroom. >> reporter: jack mccullough was 17 when the 7-year-old girl disappeared and later found dead. mccullough is 73 years old and he was just convicted in her death this year. prosecutors say back in 1957 the teenage mccullough approached maria and other girl. when the other girl left, dragging maria into an alley choked her with a wire and stabbed her in the throat and chess. he dumped her body in a wooded area 100 miles away. she was found four months later. the case was unsolved for decades. mccullough's half-sister told police that her mother incriminated mccullough before her death. he was arrested tried and convicted. he claims he has an alibi at the time of maria's death. he claims he was traveling to chicago for a medical exam before joining the air force. his half-sister says he is evil and should pend spend the rest of his life behind bars. he faces a maximum life in prison. mccullough did not testify during the trial but will have a chance to speak in court. jon:

the trafficking victims protection act, which was sponsored last year by senator brown and senator leahy and hopefully we can finish that before the end of the year but if we can't i hope early in the next congress we'll address it. there are reports that the state department does, ranks countries around the world on the efforts that they're making to deal with human trafficking and ranks them in three tiers. the third tier being the worst, nations that are not doing enough. one of the things i hope we'll look at is how we reform the process of giving some of these countries waivers. there are countries perpetually on the list of the worst possible places with regards to government policy towards human trafficking and yet they are getting waivers from the -- from the implications and the consequences of being a tier three country. there are countries getting that waiver every single year. i hope we'll examine the process legislatively of how we grant the waivers so we can have more information exactly why it is our government is granting waivers to other governments and other nations not
